I'm curious about this also. Could you paste the full xpath expression with
the variables interpolated?

Also what happens when you execute the same xpath expression in xmllint
--shell file.xml ?

If you're tired of editing you files and to try all sorts of xpath
expressions take a look at Xacobeo (http://code.google.com/p/xacobeo/). It's
written in Perl and uses XML::LibXML, it's a handy tool when one wants to
write/tweak XPath expressions and to see their results.
