It's possible, but rarely useful so I'm guessing that might not be the case. Is it possible that you just have a program that reads and writes XML, and that XML is supposed to be valid according to a schema (but there is no direct processing link to the schema)? In that case, changing the processing largely depends on what is used to read and write the XML — depending on the approach that was chosen, it might not require a lot of understanding of XML or of the Perl-XML tools.
