I've been using the Perl API to BaseX with some success; it's fast.
BaseX is an XQuery database server; you load your documents (e.g. from
Perl or from the command-line or using a GUI, your choice, or even from
Java) and can then query them with no need for re-parsing.

XQuery is a good fit for Perl.
