Daniel, one thing to try is to open the Apple menu (top-left on the main Funder window) and click on the Force Quit menu item. That will get you a window showing what’s running. Also, if you have one or more apps running that you didn’t start, you might find them as Login Items. Open the System Preferences (also under the Apple menu) and select Users & Groups. Click on you as the user and then click on the Login Items tab.
