Maybe because if it can't be found on the web, then it's likely to
be a manual process, which developers don't like?

I think the answer to the multi-word hyperlink question, from my
reading of lib/rdoc/markup.rb is "put it in braces".  Untested.

I can't see the answer to the other one.
