But isn't this exactly what we do _without_ a code of conduct? Decide on our own what appropriate behaviour is? Encouraging us to do this is good! But not a code of conduct. If two sets of people come to conflicting ideas of what it means to be a mensch, there needs to be a semi-formal process for adjudicating that and ruling on what is or is not acceptable, or the whole thing just turns into a flame war and drives people away. That's what a code of conduct **is**.
