Scala is a complex, multi-layered programming language. I'm not sure
that anyone can be a master of Scala without being able to program
Java, and I suspect a true master would have some ML or Haskell under
their belt, to understand the pure functional approach. To go from
nothing to a master of Scala might be possible in a couple years, and
I'm not sure that it wouldn't be easier to start with an good
introduction in Python or Java, and then use standard Scala
introductions. (Java is more directly applicable, but Python would
give you more mastery, by showing you more alternatives to Scala's way
of doing things.)
