About the GSoC project for Java to Scala.js IR (TASK inside)

Hello all,

If you are interested in applying to the GSoC project for compiling Java
source code/bytecode to the Scala.js IR, this e-mail is important.

As you can see from the list of recipients, there are already 4 potential
applicants for this project. This means there is going to be some
competition for this application.
Therefore, I do not want to judge your applications solely based on your
resume/past experience. I would like to evaluate applications on some
common ground, directly related to the project.

This will also help you get familiar with the Scala.js IR.

*Your task*

Your task is explained at length in the following learning repository,
which I have spent the whole day setting up:

It is a simple compiler from math expressions to the IR. All the
infrastructure for parsing, running and testing is there. The only bit that
is missing, and that I ask you to fill, is the *compiler* from untyped
trees to Scala.js IR expression trees. The readme explains it all.

*Deadline*

The official GSoC applications with proposals ends *this coming Friday*. I
realize this is too short for you to pick up this task, especially since
there is no week-end left. Therefore, the deadline for this particular task
will be *Friday April 1, 5am UTC*. (that gives me one last working day to
review the last bits before I go on vacation). Attention, that's an *am*,
so for applicants in Europe and the Americas, this basically means Thursday
end of day.

Do not wait for the deadline to send your PR (as explained in the task),
since the behavior and feedback on the PR is part of the exercise.



*Clarifications*
Clarifications can be asked as Issues on the learning repository, if they
are unrelated to GSoC in particular. If they are GSoC-related, ask them on
this mailing list thread. More real-time discussion can also happen in the
Scala.js core gitter room at https://gitter.im/scala-js/scala-js/core

If you're unsure whether something should be public, ask me personally
first via e-mail.
