It is interesting that the Java community are trying to bring back green threads.

The first two releases of the JVM operated under green threads exclusively.
Native threads began to appear in JDK 1.2 (for Solaris) and JDK 1.3 (for Linux).
By the time JDK 1.3 was available everywhere, green threads were abandoned in favor of native threads.

If project Loom does see the light of day, it will bring an option for developers: Do I spawn off this little thread as an OS thread? Or as a Green thread?
It will make for interesting architectural decisions.

Interesting, thanks for pointing that out.

Its yet another acknowledgement from the Java community that native threads are not the panacea that they are marketed to be.
For example the polyglot VertX framework which I have used heavily relies on a event loop (Reactor/Multi Reactor pattern) instead.

Its interesting, but I just don’t see how much they are going to add to the game i.e. perhaps at best Java user’s will get what Smalltalk has been doing right for eons yet they still have to code in Java 😊

Subject: [vwnc] Virtual Threads

Hi,

I was attending yesterday a talk on the Java Loom project, which aims at implementing virtual threads (instead of OS threads) in Java.
In particular I learned that any Java thread allocates 2M in memory, which limits considerably the physical number of threads in a server.
Does anyone know the comparison between Smalltalk processes and Java virtual threads ?
