Sorry about the late reply.  You can relocate anywhere you like
and then set the environment variable SMLNJ_HOME to point to the
new place.  There is also a way of rebuilding the heap images and
re-patching the script files, but I don't remember off the top of
my head how this works exactly.  (The Mac OS X installer scripts
actually use this mechanism.)
