well there are some security features. I'm a bit worried that the way 
SMLNJ loads code from the heap and jumps to it may break
unless some backward compatibility voodoo switch is turned on.

P.S. I just help fix the bugs, don't ask me to explain the crazy SKU 
policy. It is of course probably designed to maximize the amount of cash 
they can extract from the market.. and also make the EU happy. There 
maybe other antitrust issues too. For example Vista Ultimate contains a 
native DVD codec, so you can play a DVD without having to buy a third 
party codec. I suspect if they added this features in the standard lower 
price SKUs someone would have complained. That's just speculation on my 
part. Also as others have pointed out XP also has lots of SKUs  just 
people don't think about them..
