Hello,
I am working on an academic project
(http://www.rites.uic.edu/~solworth/ethos.html) where we are planning
to use ML on a non-standard platform. I am looking into what will be
required to port SMLNJ to this platform. At this point, we are
planning to run the compiler on a linux system and only run the
resulting executable itself on the new platform. I am also not
concerned with supporting any additional libraries
(POSIX-compatibility, etc) at this time although some of that may come
eventually.

As a result, I believe that I can just focus on porting ML's runtime
library that is written in C. Is that true? If not, where else are
changes necessary for porting to a new platform? If I am correct that
only the runtime lib needs changes, do you have tips about where to
look before I dive into the code? Our target platform does not
support the C std library. As a result, we'll need to change places
where the runtime uses the C stdlib. I would appreciate any advice
you could give me on this task. Thanks in advance, let me know if I
was unclear (or just wrong) about anything. Thanks again.
