example of splitBaseExt fail on Mac

I've got a filename which looks like:

Barto\314\201k_\ Concerto\ #\ 1\ for\ Violin\ \&\ Orchestra\ I\ -\  
Andante\ sostenuto.wav

admittedly this is a baaaad filename due to the unicode (??)  
characters in the filename, a diacritical o, I believe.  Still it's  
not obvious why it's throwing an exception - more importantly the  
docs don't say that it will.
