Hi Mark,
I now understand what the Java code looks like, but have no clue as to what it
corresponds to in UML Elements.

If you do this:
1. Add attribute.
2. Enter the text "myMap:Map<String, String>"
3. Press the enter button.

After step 1 we have a Class and an Attribute with the name "newAttr". The
Attribute is linked as a Feature to the owner, the Class as a Classifier. The
initialValue is null, and the "type" is set to Integer from UML 1.4 Standard
elements.

What do you expect to have in the UML model after step 3?
Can you give a similar description as I did above for step 1?
