You probably mean that you downloaded the tar.gz file from the ArgoUML website,
isn't it?

Could you see if it is possible to install ArgoUML on Ubuntu with something like:
  apt-get install ArgoUML
Maybe you have to add some repository first, I do not know.

Making packages in repositories is difficult, maybe there is a wrong one around
for  Ubuntu?
