Sun Java Desktop Article: Roll-Your-Own Mini XUL Motor For Swing

Hi,

  Mark Davidson wrote a tech paper titled "An Easy
Architecture for Managing Actions: Simplifying the
Creation of Tool Bars and Menus" that shows you how to
reinvent the toothbrush by rolling your own mini XUL
motor using the Swing UI toolkit.

  Mark kicks off his XUL testimonial as follows:

   When constructing a large application with deep
menu trees, many tool bars and popup menus, ensuring
that the properties are set correctly on each control
is quite tedious, error prone and somewhat fragile
when requirements change. 
  </quote>

  And comes up with the novel idea of using XML
instead of hard-coding everthing in
close-to-the-metal, sub-atomic Java APIs.
       
  To try out his idea Mark hacks together a small text
editor that builds its menu, toolbar and popup menu on
the fly using XML.
