DevX Article: Build Rich, Thin Client Apps Automatically Using XML

  DevX has published an article titled "Build Rich,
Thin Client Applications Automatically Using XML" by
Laurence Moroney (Reuters Innovation Labs, New York
City).

  Here's the "official" executive summary:  
  
  There are new products afoot that let you do highly
graphical client-side applications without the
performance headaches of applets or the security
concerns of ActiveX. Find out what these XWT-based
technologies can do.  

  Laurence kicks off the article by stating:

  When a user interface is defined in a document such
as XML, users would not have to download and install
their GUIs; they can simply browse them as easily as
they browse Web pages. A runtime engine would be
present on the desktop, and servers would be able to
deliver the GUI to the browser with an XML document.

  Laurence notes that Microsoft already got on the XML
UI bandwagon a long time ago because the next Windows
version code-named Longhorn shipping Betas this fall
will let you create UIs using a markup language called
XAML (XML Application Markup Language).
    
  To show why XML UI runtimes are the better way to
build rich desktops apps and trump kludges such as
Java applets or ActiveX that try to patch up plain-old
HTML browsers Laurence dives into Bambookit - a tiny
XUL motor in Java - and touches on XWT (XML Windowing
Toolkit).
