Interesting read although not surprising. Many GUI APIs/platforms are being retrofitted to suddenly support XML marshalling/unmarshalling because of XAML and other efforts. This one sounds like a good example of an API that needs a serious overhaul in order to support this type of feature. Marc, have you checked out at all KDE? I would be curious to see if it's API would be better suited towards XAML. Or how about wxWindows?
