Summary: pcre --> regex

Initial Comment:
regex is more general php extension
actually, I think php is compiled with regex by default (in spite of pcre, which is external extension)

so, here's first patch for pcre --> regex migration
(many others will go after I carefully test them)

Message:
PLA has been using pcre for many years - I'm not inclined to change it
unless there is a very good reason?
