Hi all,

in general, I think that a forum is poor replacement for a proper mailing
list. A web based interface (and particularly phpBB) can never match the
mail client of your own choice, especially when you've customized its settings
to your own style (I use a heavily tweaked mutt, for example, to be able to
cope with the hundreds of mails I receive each day...).

For this particular case, however, a phpBB might not be bad. The phpldapadmin
lists are fairly low-volume, meaning readin all messages through a web
interface is not so bad. However, do realize that people will become less
responsive. Most people (especially the more active contributors, which will
generally have a lot of other things to do) will not have the time to check
a forum multiple times a day, while a mailing list puts the message right in
their inbox (which most people do check lots of times a day).

I'm not so sure that replacing the mailing lists with a forum is such a good
idea. Perhaps you could consider to remove only the -users list and keep
-devel?

What's wrong with a mailing list for searching? I think there are plenty of
mailing list archives that can do proper searching, and simply having your
archive pages indexed by google should come a long way as well.
