Global template variables

Hi,

I have a couple of template variables which need to be available by
default in all templates. I was expecting the "globals" section in
smarty.conf.xml to be made available to each template as e.g.
{$binarycloud.globals.foo}. I've had a look in Node.php and
TemplateManager.php but can't figure out whether this feature used to be
available or whether it's something broken after phing removal. I'm sure
the issue was raised on the list a while back but I can't find the thread. 

Any ideas?
