I can confirm. It would be rather simple to drop any dependancy to iconv
though, if you're sure you don't need any translations nor utf8. It
appears in very few parts, I can tell you what to do do drop it.

By the way, why do you say character encoding is trivial ? I wouldn't
use this word, it's rather hard to make php work correctly with utf8,
particularly when db is storing texts with another encoding.
