FWIW, this is not a new issue - it exists in the 1_46_pdf release - and I suspect in previous
versions.

And in another viewer show as greek chi as expected.

Puzzlingly it is exactly the same in the lines below which shows correctly on the final pdf.

The table is deliberately the same as Table 6 from "The Non-Central
              χ<fo:inline font-size="75%" baseline-shift="super">2</fo:inline>
 and F-Distributions and their applications.", P. B. Patnaik,     Biometrika, Vol. 36, No. 1/2 (June
1949), 202-232.

The displayed pdf is attached.

The difference would seems to be in the font size, color and bold?

I'm baffled, but doubt it is worth too much effort finding the cause.
