thank you for the fast reply.
The installation seems to be more complicated than anticipated.
After having installed ruby.xx-dev as suggested  extconf.rb is still not 
satisfied.
I have now the following console protocol:

PC4:~/Installations/GTK/Cairo/rcairo-1.10.0# ruby extconf.rb
