Stroking very thin lines

Hi, I'm stroking very thin lines as a way to give them translucency, but I'm getting very weird results. I'm stroking red with line-width of 1/30 of a pixel or so, on a white background. I expect that I only get shades that are convex combinations of red and white, but I'm seeing lots of gray instead. #e8e8e8 even!
