Any alternatives to libgs DEVICE=cairo for reading PS into a cairo surface?

Behdad at one time wrote a cairo device for libgs (ghostscript).

I had written a plugin for graphviz that successfully used this device 
to import PS images as node shapes in graphs.

According to:
     http://bugs.ghostscript.com/show_bug.cgi?id=690009
this device was dropped from libgs .

I've opened a new bug to the ghostscript folks:
    http://bugs.ghostscript.com/show_bug.cgi?id=693335
but I was wondering if anyone on this list could suggest an alternative 
technique
for loading PS images on to a cairo surface?
