Great, thank for the feedback!

I am not surprised that it breaks... I have not been able to run tests
on windows yet, and I am currently mainly looking at this issue only
before doing any other development using cairo.

So the fix is probably more complicated than what I proposed, but I
think I may have at least found the root cause.

Still searching and learning cairo, so it might take a while unless we
get some help...
