The application is to render PDFs and RTFs. Backend? Its about speed and throughput.. so.. depends I guess on the GPU and OS.. It also depends on which cairo-backend you plan to use. You mentioned text, however typical text usually has little to do with vector operations from the GPU point-of-view.
