Reality check: at 600dpi, without stroke adjustment, typical staff lines
oscillate in thickness between 5 and 6 pixels.

Since the lines are comparatively close and parallel, a variation of
+20% in darkness is quite visible.  And yes, it definitely makes the
print look bad.
