Created /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/test_driver with 4 lines you described. No difference in behaviour as far as I could tell. Xorg.0.log here: https://gist.github.com/6939671 It detected the xorg.conf.d directory but I'm not sure it loaded the file in it. Lines 17-23: [ 6.107] (==) Using system config directory "/usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d" [ 6.108] (==) No Layout section. Using the first Screen section. [ 6.108] (==) No screen section available. Using defaults. [ 6.108] (**) |-->Screen "Default Screen Section" (0) [ 6.108] (**) | |-->Monitor "<default monitor>" [ 6.108] (==) No monitor specified for screen "Default Screen Section". Using a default monitor configuration.
