That problem however is shared with pango / pango_cairo, which - at least that is my impression - would be intended for more serious typesetting - i.e. creating a layout and rendering it. See e.g. PangoStyle, PangoVariant and by extension PangoFontDescription. Pango bug #341213 ( https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=341213 ) is related.
