Unfortunately, in the last few months I did not have an OS X environment
for testing cairo, which is part of the reason why I'm currently unable to
maintain the quartz backend.
As I already mentioned in the original thread (
http://lists.cairographics.org/archives/cairo/2014-July/025348.html ),
there seems to be a CFRelease() missing, so it might cause leaks (although
I'm not claiming it leaks for sure, I can't try it out).
Assuming that is not a problem, either in the same patch or in another one
(but definitely before a release [candidate]) we should update the README
to mention the new requirements.

In the quartz backend there is a bunch of 10.4-specific code, mostly
because of blend modes.
As there seems to be general agreement that maintaining 10.4 compatibility
is of no interest, I will try to provide a patch which gets rid of that
dead code "soonish".
My laptop died last week, hence right now I have no development environment
at all; on the bright side, in a couple of weeks I should get a new
MacBookPro and be able to develop and test on OS X again.
