Hyperlinks in document surfaces - what's the complexity?

Dear Cairo team,

I am looking for hyperlinks support in Cairo output, primarily in PDF
output. I consider investing time in adding such support to Cairo.

Is there any information, thoughts, estimates you'd want to share on this
topic? I've seen  [cairo] API proposal for document links
<http://lists.cairographics.org/archives/cairo/2007-November/012026.html>;
is this proposal still valid? What would be the minimum viable feature set
for this?
