cairo maintenance status

Hi- There seem to be a lot of messages about the state of various backends being maintained or ignored. And some Gnome people seem to complain a lot about Cairo. But, as far as I can tell, as one subscribed to the mailing lists and one who uses Cairo in hobby projects, the project seems to be functioning acceptably. Is there an actual problem?
