How to add a badge to an icon?

Hi folks,

in an icon list, I'd like to add badges to icons. For example, if a file is
a link, I'd like to add a link sign to the file icon. Or if a file is
important, some attention badge could be added to the file icon.

My problem probably comes down to: how do I dynamically mix two icons
(badge icon over file icon)?
