window resizing on Mac OSX

On the Mac using xQuartz there is a bug (well known:
https://github.com/XQuartz/XQuartz/issues/438) that when you
resize a window it does not get refreshed properly.
I've added everything I could think of to force a refresh in my
c++ code that is called on resize but nothing works:
update();
repaint();
getApp()->refresh();
getApp()-flush();
any ideas?
