Dear friends and users of ICU,

We are pleased to announce that the beta release of ICU Version 2.8 
(http://oss.software.ibm.com/icu/) is now available.

The ICU beta release 2.8 is available on our public web sites, 
http://oss.software.ibm.com/icu/download/2.8/ 
http://oss.software.ibm.com/icu4j/download/2.8/  and
http://oss.software.ibm.com/icu4j/icu4jni/icu4jni.html

Please use our bug reporting tool and support mailing lists, see 
http://oss.software.ibm.com/icu/

If you plan or consider to use ICU 2.8, then please download and test it at your 
earliest convenience.

Please submit bugs, porting changes and fixes(!) by Friday 01/12/2004.

Features of this reference release will include:
     * Extended locale ID support
     * Multiple calendars support
     * Historical timezones support
     * 64 bit number formatting
     * Support for UCA 4.0 (since ICU 2.6.1)
     * Many other updates and enhacements
     * Various bug fixes
