In addition to this announcement, I would like to request people with the 
following platforms to make a special effort to test ICU 3.0 d01.  Some 
build improvements may not work, and I'd like to verify that everything is 
okay before the next draft of ICU is released.  If "gmake check" passes, 
then the platform is safe to use ICU, and a reply to the icu4c-support 
mailing list stating the status of these platforms would be helpful.

HP-UX on IA64
Linux on anything besides IA32 (x86)
Solaris on IA32 (x86)
QNX
BeOS


The following platforms do not have this build improvement.

Irix
MPRAS
PTX
z/OS
os/400
Tru64 (OSF)

If you would like to build ICU in significantly less time for the above 6 
platforms, you can contact me, and I can give you some directions.  Most 
of the directions are in icu/source/tools/genccode.c, but the 
documentation can be improved.

We are pleased to announce that the d01 (alpha) release of ICU Version 3.0 
(http://oss.software.ibm.com/icu/) is now
available.

The ICU alpha release 3.0 is available on our public web sites, 
http://oss.software.ibm.com/icu/download/3.0/ and
http://oss.software.ibm.com/icu4j/download/3.0/

Please use our bug reporting tool and support mailing lists, see 
http://oss.software.ibm.com/icu/

If you plan or consider to use ICU 3.0, then please download and test it 
at your earliest convenience.

Please submit bugs, porting changes and fixes(!) by Friday 05/21/2004.

Features of this reference release will include:
* IO library (C) - POSIX like input/output library, icuio is officially 
supported.
* Regular expressions C API (C)
* ICU4J reads ICU4C's data files natively (J)
* Java port of the new RBBI engine (J)
* Unicode 4.0.1. support
* Layout engine support for using different canonically equivalent Unicode 
forms of the same text.
* Collation data is in a separate data tree, allowing for easier 
modularization.
* bug fixes, build times improvement, better platform support.
