The trial-and-error stuff is only used when a powerup of the card doesn't work (like with German medical cards in the forementioned reader); in such a case the protocol to be used can be determined by trying the given range of protocols. This shouldn't affect your reader at all, because your new code would make the powerup function work on the first attempt.
