chipcardd2 1.9.12beta doesn't find CCID drivers

I installed libchipdrive2-1.9.12beta on a Slackware 9.1 system (kernel
2.4.24) roughly as follows [1]:

> ./configure \
  --prefix=/usr --with-docpath=/usr/doc/$name/apidoc --sysconfdir=/etc \
  i486-slackware-linux
> make
> [changed directories]
> make DESTDIR="..." install
> [I set up symbolic links for each binary i486-slackware-linux-X to X]
> [Installed documentation, built the package, and installed it]

In addition to installing the "Generic CCID driver" (as illustrated on
libchipcard.de [2]) I also installed the "Original Driver from SCM":

> find /usr/lib/chipcard2-server/lowlevel/ifd -type f
./spr332ccidDriver.bundle/Contents/Linux/spr332ccidDriver
./spr332ccidDriver.bundle/Contents/PkgInfo
./spr332ccidDriver.bundle/Contents/Info.plist
./ifd-ccid.bundle/Contents/Linux/libccid.so.0.9.4mp1
./ifd-ccid.bundle/Contents/Info.plist

However, chipcardd2 just doesn't find my card reader (an SPR532 that
runs fine with OpenSC, and yes OpenCT and PCSCLite daemons are *not*
running):

> /usr/sbin/chipcardd2 --pidfile /var/run/chipcardd2.pid -f --loglevel notice --logtype console

[Even when I re-plug the reader it's not discovered. The error message
on line five can probably be ignored: I don't have LibSysFS installed
since I use Kernel 2.4.24.]

> chipcard-tool list
[nothing]

What may I be doing wrong? How can I find out more?

[1] BTW building the srcdoc doesn't work: "No rule to make target
    `Doxyfile'".
