persistent server connections

I think, from the API documentation, this is likely not possible... but:

I have need to port an application that reads a file of email messages 
and submits them through an SMTP server.  The make-and-break behavior 
implied by libESMTP looks to add unnecessary overhead in this case.

Is it possible to create a persistent connection via libESMTP?
