libwww installation problems

Hi, I attempted to install libwww (version 5.4.0) on a linux machine; configure 
and make appeared to go smoothly, but I got the following error message upon 
entering "make install" : 

/bin/sh ../../../config/mkinstalldirs /usr/local/lib
/bin/sh ../../../libtool  --mode=install /usr/local/bin/ginstall -c
libxmltok.la /usr/local/lib/libxmltok.la
/usr/local/bin/ginstall -c .libs/libxmltok.so.0.1.0
/usr/local/lib/libxmltok.so.0.1.0
/usr/local/bin/ginstall: cannot create regular file
`/usr/local/lib/libxmltok.so.0.1.0': Permission denied
make[4]: *** [install-libLTLIBRARIES] Error 1

Does anyone know how to fix this?  Any help would be
much appreciated.
