If you are just going to start work with mtl,
i would rather remocommend using uBLAS ( a part of BOOST library, www.boost.org ).
It is quite young library and still, under extensive developement.
It is also a bit more modern ( it employs
expresion templates technique, so matrix expressions
look natural and efficiency penalty is rather minor ).
