Path::get which is what I just changed it to determines the correct protocol. 
So Flow::getByPath allows flow vars ONLY. Path::get allows anything. 
including flow - there is a default, which can be specified - which should be 
flow - so when you do <action type="md5" params='//_post/user_password"/>
you imply flow. But you could now also do things like
 <action type="md5" params='post:user_password"/>

That may have been the issue -it was defaulting to string - just changed to 
flow - try again - note that I updated md5 twice - get the latest
