--enable-release not working any more?

Hi,

I switched from revision 996 to 1261 today and my release binaries got three 
times as big as before. Actually the configure switch --enable-release does not 
change the size of the binaries any more (I double checked that it did before).
How can I check what's going wrong?

Another point --enabled-demos=no or --disable-demos also does not seem to have 
any effect...
