The interface should remain basically the same (excepting for the SOFTX in the 
extension name to become SOFT). I still need to write up an extension spec for 
it to get feedback on, though. The next release should have it finished.

Should be somewhat soon. I'd like to get specs written up for a couple of the 
in-progress extensions (loopback and direct channels), to get them complete 
for release. After they're finished up I'll do a call for testing, and release 
soon after that barring no severe problems.
