Problem running 7.1 headsets with OpenAL-Soft

Hi,
 
I have Plantronics 780 GameCom headsets running in Dolby 7.1 surround sound mode,
and I'm getting very loud screeching (maybe overdriven?) noises when running
with Windows XP hardware acceleration on. (Which is the default.) against
OpenAL-Soft.
 
These headphones and setting have worked with everything else I've tried,
Left4Dead2, Everquest, music, Joal.
 
I was running OpenAL from Joal, which is from what I understand the
OpenAL (not Soft) version 6.14.357.24.  And this worked fine as well.
I switched to lwjgl 2.8.4 which apparently has OpenAL-Soft 1.14.
 
The reason I switched to OpenAL-Soft was because it seems newer and in
development, and I also was experiencing a complete system hang on exit
with the version stated above, which I see openAL-Soft fixed.  Plus it's
what lwjgl uses.
 
However, as soon as I switched, my 3D audio became very loud and screechy.
 
Playing with settings I discovered it went back to normal if I turned off
the "standard DirectSound acceleration features".  Which is step 3 in
the slider acceleration settings out of 4.  The default is everything on
at 4 which previously worked.  1 or 2 is what works here.  (2 is called "Basic
Acceleration.)
 
Unfortunately however, this doesn't work for me, since I do not wish to
blow out people's ears when I try to get them to run my program, which
heavily makes use of 3D spacial sounds.  I'm surprised this works on
the seemingly much older OpenAL.
 
I am running Windows XP on a ASUS P4P-800vm motherboard.  3GHZ Pentium IV.
I have upgraded my headphones driver.  It is a USB device.  The problem still
seems to exist in stereo non-dolby.  I'm playing multiple wav files at different
points.
 
I should also say I'm fairly new to OpenAL.
