Naming releases

Changes for the next release are already coming in.  There was a request
a while back for a different naming scheme in the "experimental"
category.  I would use 1.5a, 1.5b, 1.5c and so on as precursors to 1.5
but some folks find that confusing.  I find "1.5-pre1" clumsy.  Any
other suggestions, or votes for/against a particular scheme?
