autoconf, automake, & libtool

If there are no active efforts, would the group be open to the idea using these tools? If there are technical reasons for not wishing to pursue the use of these tools I would be interested to hear them for educational purposes. In a superficial search of the mailing list, I saw that Wesley Terstra started work on autoconf scripts for state threads, but the last reference = I see to this work was posted in 2002 around release 1.3.
