Expanding wxListCtrl and wxTreeCtrl to fill height of dialog

I'm setting the proportion to 1 for my wxListCtrl/wxTreeCtrl with all other controls in their vertical sizer set to zero and they're not expanding vertically to fill the screen or dialog. Is there a trick to those controls? I was using a wxGrid to display a DB table and switched it to a wxListCtrl. The grid would expand to fill the space available but the list isn't doing that. I figure whatever I'm doing wrong is the same as for a tree in a new dialog.
